She's a Harley girl Our neighbor across the cul de sac had a get-together last night. One of his guests rode up on her Harley Davidson Sportster. Cara insisted on going over to see it. The bike's rider came back out of the house when she saw us looking at her bike, and lifted Cara up into the seat for a minute in the saddle. As a father, I'm apparently DOOMED. comments... (2)
Lori's first pics
Lorien Annalee Stearns Lorien Annalee Stearns, born today 6/17/2007 (Father's Day!) at 2:49pm EST. Mom and baby are gorgeous and doing extremely well after a short, "not so bad" (Carolee's words) labor. Pictures and stats to come! UPDATE: I just put Carolee and Lori down for a nap. They're both in really good shape. And I know you're all itching for vital stats, so here we go: Lori:
I'm working on getting some pictures up as I type, so stay tuned! comments... (11)
We really will tell you. We promise. The pre-labor event of this past Saturday has faded into the distance for me, but I know it put everyone else on edge. My friend Tracy called yesterday and was surprised when I answered the phone. She expected me to be nursing a newborn and someone else to be fielding phone calls. My birth assistant just called to ask if I thought she had time to run an errand to Woodbridge and back (she'd be gone for about an hour and a half). I laughed. There's NOTHING going on here, and I'm not even DUE until sometime next week. Of course, I could go into labor any second now, and Lori could suddenly fall out on the floor, but really... We would still make phone calls and send emails and make a blog post within an hour. Yet another benefit of having a home birth: we'll never be more than 100 feet from the computer. So, by all means, feel free to call and say "Hi!" But if you get the answering machine, you should assume that I'm either out running errands *GASP*, playing outside with the kids, or possibly catching a much-needed nap. Unless you've been notified otherwise, no, she hasn't engaged yet, no, I'm not in labor, and no, she hasn't been born yet. Because we really will tell you. We promise. :-) comments... (2)
PRE-Laboring, that is... I spent most of yesterday trying to be patient with this baby and my body, eating well, taking two naps, and generally enjoying a GORGEOUS day outside, all while having fairly consistent contractions every 6-15 minutes. For the most part, I succeeded in the patience department, even after 24 hours of contractions that never really seemed to change (some would get serious, but they never stayed that way). Around 9:30 PM, Alice (our midwife) decided to visit and see if things were going anywhere. She explained that often the more kids you have, the more the uterus likes to "rehearse" before getting down to business. After checking, she said the baby was still HIGH in my pelvis and that my cervix hadn't changed much, which means that 24 hours of contractions had had little effect! Her advice was to get a good night's sleep and do my best to ignore them until I CAN'T, which will mean that they've changed and something real might be going on. That could be today (Sunday), or next Tuesday, or even beyond... So, I'm up at my usual time in the middle of the night having gotten about 5 hours of reasonable, if restless, sleep, and I'm headed back to bed, still having contractions that I can ignore as long as I don't get stressed out about them. I may make it to Liam's recital after all!! Wish me luck in maintaining this zen attitude! comments... (6)
Laboring It seems fitting to me that my first blog post in something like a year is something of significance: Carolee appears to be in labor, with contractions since 10pm last night. At this point she's starting to have to pay attention to them, and they seem to be about 6 minutes apart (give or take). If history is any judge, we should have a new baby before the end of the weekend. :) comments... (1)
